His phone rang, displaying his mother’s number. Reluctantly, he answered, bracing himself for her usual barrage

of complaints. As expected, the matriarch was furious, accusing Emma of taking back the gifts she had given her

and Lillian. Alex listened wearily, his mother’s anger over material things seeming trivial compared to his current

predicament.

“Mother, if Emma wants her possessions back, it’s her right,” Alex said, trying to quell the argument. “We're

divorced. She's free to do as she pleases.”

His mother’s insistence on keeping the gifts reflected her attachment to the status they conferred. Alex,

however, felt differently

After the recent events with Bella, he began to see how he might have

wronged Emma.

“I'll look into it,” Alex said, ending the call, only to be immediately contacted by Emma. His heart raced with a

mix of anticipation and apprehension.

“What do you want?” He asked, his tone brusque.

Emma’s response was calm and detached. “I'll be at the cafe under your office building the day after tomorrow.

Let’s return each other's belongings and end this chapter for good.”

Alex's frustration grew as Emma brushed off his attempts at a deeper conversation.

“And what about Bella's scandals? Was that your doing? | thought you promised to delete any

incriminating material after our divorce,” he accused, his voice tinged with bitterness.

Emma's laugh was cold and distant. “Sthings are beyond my control. Instead of questioning me, perhaps

consider who Bella has wronged over the years.”

With those final words, Emma hung up, leaving Alex feeling powerless and angry..

“To the apartment,” he said under his breath, his thoughts a whirlwind of regret and unresolved feelings. As he

drove away, the complexities of his past with Emma and his present turmoil with Bella intertwined, painting a
